P.S. You can say what you like about the use of "the accordion" but I think it can work really well if used carefully and this is a great example!

New age hieroglyphics, swarthy seaman who need only speak Whale to make it so, and a partridge (or 2) in a pair tree. I see the Leviathan's eye in the bottom panels, stylized to be sure.
