Wow! This one turned out pretty cool...with a continuity of the eye in panels 1 and 3.
Love the tribute to James, docilebob.
Angieelz at January 15, 2007 7:58 AM
Nice opener, Casey!
jakedrews at January 15, 2007 9:21 AM
Cyberia, that eye-thing is insane! Extremely cool.
Jim at January 15, 2007 10:22 AM
Not saying that I don't like this one, because I do, but I was just wondering why everyone isn't screaming "fresh prince" or whatever.
skunksarecool at January 15, 2007 10:29 AM
Because most people have the misconception that a FP has to do with blending and not with continuity of ideas, images, symbols, etc. Yes, this is a pretty well-blended Fresh Prince, but it's a FP. However, the final product turned out well enough.
Freddy at January 15, 2007 10:44 AM
Sorry, let me re-think that. The more I look at it, the more I see that Inky was intending a sort of peel-back-the-wall effect with his slice. Maybe not the best continuation or anything, but no longer would I call it a FP. Didn't mean to jump the FP-gun on that one.
Good work all!
Freddy at January 15, 2007 10:47 AM
I agree with you Freddy. My initial take after seeing only the thumbnail of this corpse was that it was a fresh prince. But Inky created a subtle transition that I like (I kind of did the same thing on my very first corpse and nobody mentioned fresh princes). In some ways the Casey's and Inky's pieces actually compliment each other better than the last two parts - I think primarily due to the similar scale of their textures, and their sparse use of color.
Fiddler at January 15, 2007 12:09 PM
I thought this was a FP when I saw the thumbnail too ... but then I thought how difficult that slice must have been to work with... there isn't much else Inky could have done.
I really like the broken-heart eye.
kookyknut at January 15, 2007 2:08 PM
"...there isn't much else Inky could have done"? Really? Seems there is a mulitude of possibilities, but that is beside the point.
I think it is an interesting juxtaposition - the mosaic decaying or emerging from the earth. Maybe there is a continuation that is supposed to mean something (can't tell by the title) or maybe it was just a semi-snub. Won't know what his/her intention was unless Inky speaks up.
Still, I find the top half intriguing.
damselfly at January 15, 2007 2:39 PM
Sorry, I didn't mean to do an "FP". It didn't seem so bad when I was creating my piece! (And I should have guessed that was supposed to be a frame at the sides...)
Anyway, the rest of you did great! Nicely blended, and the starting image looks amazing.
Inky at January 15, 2007 2:56 PM
I have a comment about some recent Corpses (including this one), and some comments about commenting in general in the Forum over here.
Everyone feel free to start yelling at me.
Phineas at January 15, 2007 3:57 PM
Inky, I am about as new at this as you are (I haven't even had anything published yet), but as a fellow newbie, I would like to tell you the strategy I used in my first section.
I alternated between continuing the elements I was given, morphing parts into other forms and adding a couple of new elements. I tried to make it so that my piece became a part of the one that came before it instead of just being built onto it.
I realize that my method is untested (and I will be doubly embarrassed if my section doesn't work), but I hope my ideas can be of some use.
Madwise at January 15, 2007 5:08 PM
Phineas, I'm really eager to hear what you have to say but forum is flupped. I've encountered this before with this new one. Liked the old one better.
damselfly at January 15, 2007 11:52 PM
I haven't checked out Phineas' comments on the forum yet(which works great from my point of view, what does 'flupped' mean)
I know this is gonna sound weird, I'm not great at this blending stuff, but......
Oh, I wish, wish I had gotten the second panel to do. No offense, Inky, art is art and no one has any right to say right or wrong IMHO...but the first panel has so much possibility, just juicy for a good blend and that classical face and frame!
I think the image in one and the image in 3 DOES really sync with that ear-like thing on the far left in one, and the big wheel in 3
Sorry, this is a very fresh prince.BUT it is a really, really nice 'whole' in spite of it. Seeing it by itself, larger, Inkies 'neutrality' really makes the others images pop out.
So rules is shmules.....
Nice corpse. ....um Rip James? I've heard of Rick, but Rip?
Dorian at January 16, 2007 5:47 AM
Yeah... Phineas, I've been meaning to follow up on our brief forum interaction in which I, too, found the forum to be "flupped". Basically, if I'm not logged in, I can't see the majority of the threads, and following a link to them gives me an error.
I tried to post on this, one day, but when I was logged in I couldn't see the problem, and I wanted to be logged in to respond to you, and then something weird happened and the forum ate my post about it, and I lost my energy to follow up.
Shae at January 16, 2007 7:02 AM
Here's more info. The error says:
Some problems were encountered
The requested discussion could not be found.
And also, I can see the titles of the discussions there on the left, but when I click on them I get the same error.
Is this the same problem you get, Damselfly?
Shae at January 16, 2007 7:04 AM
@Shae: Sorry. Of course you have to be logged into the forum for the link to work properly. See if that doesn't work. If you're accessing from a personal machine, go ahead and check the 'remember me' box at login and you'll probably never see the problem again.
@damselfly: The old one took hours a day just to keep the spam out. As above, log in and you'll be able to see everything.
Phineas at January 16, 2007 7:26 AM
I haven't had any problems with the new forum as long as I've been logged in. Are we talking about problems (flups?) with the forum when you are logged in? Am I being obtuse?
Fiddler at January 16, 2007 7:34 AM
It's always funny to post something only to find somebody was posting the answer while you were posting. Thx Phineas.
Fiddler at January 16, 2007 7:37 AM
Overall, this one turned out nicely, I think. I`m a bit embarrassed about my mis-alignment, bad day to quit sniffin glue, I guess.
@Dorian : RIP is for Rest In Peace. James Brown`s demise was announced the day I did my section.
docilebob at January 16, 2007 1:50 PM
Yes, Shae, that was the same problem I was having. I've never signed in before, so I just registered and it tells me I'll have to be "accepted". I'm not used to being accepted! Will I ever get to see what Phineas has to say and if I need to yell at him? The suspense is killing me.
damselfly at January 16, 2007 4:50 PM
Hm, Phineas, well the reason that never seemed like the issue is that there are two or three threads that I can follow links to, see and browse *without* being logged in, despite the fact that most lock me out. Also, I'd expect a "please log in" rather than an "error" message.
Damselfly, I'm sure that you'll soon meet the rigorous acceptance guidelines and will soon be right there yelling with the rest of us. :)
Shae at January 16, 2007 10:31 PM
A lot of art you have to see from a distance, and when i look at this close up the top 2 dont seem to fit, but from further away, I can see a continuation in the face.
I'm also having a forum prob... I was signed in and made a post but it was eaten.
PatchWyrk at January 17, 2007 2:15 PM
I think Inky did fine. If you scroll down to only look at what s/he would have acquired, you can see that the general colors and light levels do match up. There are also tiles falling from panel one into two.
I'd say it's not a FP.
JohnnyAmbush at January 17, 2007 10:18 PM
Inky, your statement "Fine, I lose. Get over it," in your user profile; was it placed there after this critique or before it?
I wanted to see what else you had done, etc, and find this was your first. If you're considering throwing in the towel after this one effort, please don't. I love the texture you used in this piece, and the fun you had with the light on it.
We all catch hell here from time to time. Geeze, afterall we're all just a bunch of high-strung, ego-challenged artists who just want to please. Can you imagine a less likely group?
Phineas says it's a game, but we all know the truth: The ceiling of the New Sistine Chapel in the New Jeruselem will be plastered with these beauties and we need to be up to that call.
Or not. Either way, life is too short (I turn 50 this year; I know!) to quit when the tough gets going. As they said to Sadam, "Hang in there!"
Fiddler at January 18, 2007 8:01 AM
I think the division is too abrupt. It wouldn't have taken much to use little squares in the second panel to blend it.
a neon devil breath at January 19, 2007 11:23 AM
Fiddler: I did add that to my profile after reading Phineas' forum post, which implied that I intentionally ignored the first image and slotted in my own. Looking back at my profile now though, I think what I said was a bit silly. I've had a stressful week, which isn't a good time to be making decisions!
Anyway, I've taken these comments into account, and I'd definitely like to give this corpsin' business another shot some day. :)
