It's hard to read calligraphy but I think the big character is "neko" in Japanese: cat.

wow, i had almost given up on seeing this one any time in the near future, but those third and fourth panels made it totally worth the wait. i love the lush greens of the third panel especially.
the sign is actually chinese brush calligraphy, and the large character means "tiger."
awesome work by everyone. i am pleased.
