Nice. That double-trunked tree is pretty sweet.

This is THE best corpse I have ever seen posted on this site (yes, I've looked through all the archives). My jaw is on the floor... this is true surrealism.
Crucibelle at July 13, 2006 2:59 PM
I guess I have mixed feelings about this one. Each player did a fine job with transitions; however, I have never warmed up to the extensive use of photography in slices. Ah well, variety is the spice of life.
Was this one posted upside down? (haha!)
jakedrews at July 13, 2006 3:18 PM
jakedrews,
I must be blind... I don't see any 'extensive use of photography' in this corpse. You 'if it ain't hand-drawn, it ain't good' snobs really bug me. :\
Crucibelle at July 13, 2006 3:53 PM
Oh, believe me, I'm not a hand-drawn guy. (For one thing, I don't have the talent.) Nor do I particularly care for the "hand-drawn" or any other kind of snobs.
I do find that some degree of criticism is occasionally helpful, and I certainly welcome it when it is directed against me. That being said, I limit my comments because of the reactions they inevitably provoke.
I guess it's hard for me to define (my opinion of) quality, but I know it when I see it. Also, because there is little interest in my definition anyway, I rarely step into the fray.
Most importantly, I find this EC medium to be superb, and I truly appreciate the medium's ability to appeal to a broad spectrum of viewers.
C - I look forward to collaborating with you in the future. By the way, much of your stuff looks hand drawn. If so, you have quite a talent!
jakedrews at July 13, 2006 4:09 PM
I think this one is upside-down.
So that's where bottled water comes from.
moonroof at July 13, 2006 4:09 PM
Oh great title too.
moonroof at July 13, 2006 4:11 PM
Yeah the upside-down tree is what grabbed me and continues to. Whatever that is to the left of it though disturbs me.
A lot of great, creative corpsing in this one. Sincere props to gfuz.

jakedrews, I REALLY like your slice. It is what lifts this corpse from mere collage to a personal statement (even though the statement ends up being unconsciously collective). No disrespect intended to the other participants at all, though, without the upside-down tree you wouldn't have the mirror image. There's an intention there already to give something to the next person to run away with it. I just like the squares with the image blurred within them, and the intriguing roman numbers. And good finish too, on this corpse. (I love skulls, and I never tire of seeing them. They're part of the surreal art language. I'll go away now.

jakedrews,
I am one of your biggest fans. I love you... and i mean that in the most innocent way possible.. heheh :)
Crucibelle at July 13, 2006 11:47 PM
thanks jim. the thing on the left is a fig, and it really looked like one in the slice i got. also the lady looked like sand, therefor the hourglass.
jakedrews, i was really hoping my successor would pick up the tree and put it the way it belongs, so thank you for doing it so brilliantly. btw. there's probably more hand drawn stuff in the whole corpse than you might think. good job everyone!
Gfuz at July 14, 2006 5:22 AM
Hey all thanks for the commentary. This one is really growing on me. What fun!
jakedrews at July 14, 2006 8:03 AM
sheesh. I guess I should've said 'grunt, grunt'.
Maria P at July 14, 2006 10:27 PM
jakedrews,
i found it neccessary to comment again, as my last comment was ... um, under the influence (sorry people). I do hand-draw many of my things... but i also use photography. The trick to using photography wisely is that.. people cannot tell that you have used it.. understand what I mean? I mean, there is cut and paste... then there is something else entirely different. I hope I'm making sense, here.
This corpse is an example of wisely used photography, in my opinion. Photographic manipulation is considered an art form, these days... especially in the digital arena. I think we all need to get used to it and respect it for what it is. It's not and easy way out nor a cop out... I can spend hours upon hours on a photographic manipulation..giving it my own twist. Others can argue that it is not a form of art, but I don't agree with that argument.. and I will stand by that. Thanks for reading.

Maria P,
I'm not understanding what you mean. Why do you think you should have said 'grunt grunt'? I always enjoy your commentary as well as your artwork. =)

Crucibelle, you make good points. Looking back at my own contributions, most fall under the category of photo manipulation as you define it. Thus it is de facto my preferred art form, as you'll see with my recently submitted starter panel.
For what it's worth, my beef is when folks just pop in a photograph taking up all or most of their section without any manipulation at all.

"For what it's worth, my beef is when folks just pop in a photograph taking up all or most of their section without any manipulation at all"
I agree, whole-heartedly. :) I've complained before on here about people who just pop in a photo. I'd really like to see less of that, and more creative manip. I think we are pretty much on the same page, jake. =)
Going sort of off the subject here.. i really liked that piece you did with the meat (steaks) in it. I really wish I could learn to do things on a smaller scale, such as that. All my stuff is huge. I'll have to try some smaller things. You inspire me greatly, jake.. thank you! =)
Crucibelle at July 21, 2006 4:50 PM
Oh ho! That's much better than the slanty emoticon (:\) above :)
jakedrews at July 21, 2006 5:07 PM
I've also made my Photoshop files available for download on my website if you think they can help...

This is the best corpse for ages - top 2 slices are particularly great!
