argh! i'm sorry to have let everyone down with that seam... it wasn't there on my machine... :(

tavia, your piece is incredible. just amazing. did you draw it yourself?

unapologetic at June 7, 2006 7:04 AM

Lots of nice work, but somehow the whole just isn't hanging together as well as one would hope.

Lilah, I like your slice.

Shae at June 7, 2006 7:58 AM

Unapologetic? Did you just.... apologize?!?

Does this mean you will cease to exist? ^__^

It is a shame about the seam at the top. Did you resize, or adjust the contrast or something?

Anyway, I love the first two panels very much. Beautiful design and the animal theme is great. You can't go wrong with kitty noses. You just can't. And Tavia, those creatures are awesome!

dagfooyo at June 7, 2006 10:44 AM

thank you and no I didnt draw them I found them on clipart.com and altered them appropriatley.

tavia27 at June 7, 2006 2:03 PM

OY Stop with the lines thing already - Un: this is perfect - the kitty has lots on its mind as it peers out from under the edge of the bedspread. Is it watching the dustmotes below? Step back and this looks cool - if you have to go down the block to get there ok its not working for you - works for me though - Great job everyone - and Thanks Shea I'm glad you like the slice - I had a few versions of it but decided to go with less colours rather than more - seems to have worked and I love what Cookiepirate did to ended up :)

lilah at June 7, 2006 5:16 PM

clipart, clipart dot com ??? too funny XD

tony at June 7, 2006 8:12 PM

Yes, Tony, we know you are Mr. high-and-mighty who thinks he is better than everyone else because he doesn't use 'clipart'. *rolls eyes*

Tavia, what a wonderful start. I love Lilah's section, as well.

gypsydawn at June 8, 2006 6:54 AM

What a ridiculously awesome amount of symetry--or however it's spelled.

Unapolegetic--your slice is beyond awesome. No apolgizing!

cookiepirate at June 8, 2006 12:17 PM

gypsydawn: thanks for your friendly, open minded, and informed response.

if you had actually read, without your own bias, and understood the threads concerning drawn versus borrowed imagery, you would already know that i had nothing bad to say about clipart, copy paste, borrowed imagery, or any person who uses them in their process. any negative connotion connected to those terms was inferred, and not implied by me. i simply wanted the option to play on some corpses which were hand drawn only, in addition to the regular versions posted here. you'll note i have not placed myself above participating on those which include borrowed imagery.

my comment above was in response to an email i received months ago from a user here who wrote me personally at the time i was requesting that the hand drawn only option be added to the cms. that person wrote me and asked that i refrain from using the demeaning and derogatory term 'clipart' when referring to the process used by many of the players here.

again i have participated in the borrowed images formats, and have made no negative comments about the process. i simply wanted an option added for those who want to draw, instead of borrow and manipulate. i have never claimed in this forum that one style is better than another. art is art. i recognize that. everyone has their own preferences. you should recognize that.

i simply found it funny that a player here would use the taboo term and that there is actually a site called clipart.com.

when you finish rolling your eyes you can kiss my fuzzy pink underwear.

tony at June 8, 2006 1:28 PM

I rolled my eyes once, but one of them rolled under the fridge and got all dusty.

Daniel at June 9, 2006 7:28 AM

Dusty eyeballs sound painful :/

lilah at June 9, 2006 8:19 PM

Anyone who's had a bit to do with Tony knows he is as far from high and mighty as you can get.
He (and I) just value originality.
Anyone who is using clipart.com maybe isn't trying as hard as some other people on this site.
Not that there is anything wrong with that!
Clip away!
But it is pretty funny, Tony! ;)

AndyFromJava at June 11, 2006 10:29 PM

Holy crap.

Anyone who claims to be able to make an assessment of how hard someone is trying based on their results is mistaken. Maybe they only have one working finger, or perhaps they have poor vision, or perhaps they're just learning their software, or they are distracted by thoughts of their imminent death. All these things would require a person to "try harder" to get results comparable in "quality" (or something) to someone without these hindrances. You don't know where people are coming from, so you can't tell how hard they try simply by their results, or even by their methods.

Plus, to make sure we achieve the nausea promised by the phrase ad nauseum, let me repeat that the reuse of graphic images in art is not unoriginal. One fantastic example is Max Ernst's Une Semaine de Bonte, but there are so many others.

doctormatt at June 12, 2006 1:56 AM

I don't think I mentioned the quality of the results, doc.
I'm all for people having a go within their personal limitations.
I personally would prefer to see a strange and clumsy personal drawing than a gorgously photoshop filtered clip art.

I am familiar with the surrealists' reuse of imagery, and certainly the repetition of this point is inducing faint nausea...
Yes, nothing is truly """"""original""""" in our crazy post modern world...of course it's valid... yawn.
I'm boring myself now!

But clipart is usually other people's generic images of other peoples' images.

Because clip art is designed to be used by everybody for lots of purposes (like powerpoint presentations) it has a generic quality. Clip Art is the Fast Food of imagery. Some of it might be okay...
but I bet Max wouldn't have used any. :)

AndyFromJava at June 12, 2006 5:59 PM

"I'm all for people having a go within their personal limitations.

So would I . Still, I think making judgements on someone's efforts based merely on their results is foolish.

doctormatt at June 13, 2006 6:37 PM

Doctor, Doctor, Doctor...
You yourself do some nice work, and are conscientious and play withthe spirit I appreciate.
It's easy to be crabby on these posts, and I don't want to be, but...
(sounds of crabby artiste mounting his high horse)
ahem: I guess clip art tends to be homogenised, commercial art, so it is less likely to be effective when used in a surreal context.
As to results- I really wasn't judging anybody's results-
more expressing bemused disappointment that some are resorting to clip art when there are so many beautiful and strange, personal images and drawings out there (and inside them).
I'd suggest that almost everybody who contributes to this site liked to draw as a child. I wish more people could remember and trust that original artistic enjoyment, and allow that pure expression to be part of their corpsing, and we had less cheesy images, celebs faces etc.
I'll shut up and take my pills now.

AndyFromJava at June 14, 2006 2:03 AM

tony,

Actually, I DID read your commentary in the forum under your 'hand drawn only' thread. Despite your insistance to the contrary, I found your statements to be derogatory, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

I, myself, do not use clipart nor borrowed imagery from the web in my corpse panels. This is not because I think using clipart/etc is wrong, but just a personal preference of mine. I think that the attitude that a person who uses clipart is somehow beneath a person who doesn't, stinks. The owner of this site himself has said that he sometimes uses borrowed imagery from the web.

Albert Einstein said "the secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." If Tavia would have replied that her panel was indeed hand-drawn, you naysayers would be singing her praises. The fact is, Tavia's panel looks great. It doesn't matter whether it was hand-drawn or not.

And Tony, you can keep your fuzzy pink underwear to yourself.
