An Exquisite Corpse

Sorry about not catching the FP on this one earlier. But by the time it came to my attention I liked the thing enough that I didn't want to kill it.

:wumpscut:, step into my office...

Phineas at May 23, 2006 6:54 AM

That is...so unfortunate.

Doing my panel for this corpse presented an interesting problem because the 15px slice I got was entirely white, with only the vaguest hint of something possibly greyish in the very top few pixels. So it was kind of like starting a corpse, except knowing that a) I couldn't extend all the way to the top and b) I still had to somehow connect my panel to whatever was above it.

It actually could have turned out ok if there had been even a rudimentary attempt at a transition in the second panel. Disappointing. Wumpscut, I know you're new to the game, but that doesn't get you an exemption from the rules.

Andrew, I really like how you extended my from my slice. ZoundsPadang...who knows what could have been? Oh well.

velocity girl at May 23, 2006 6:59 AM

Phineas...thanks for letting it live on. FP or no, I do like to see how everything turns out.

velocity girl at May 23, 2006 7:02 AM

Dammit! My sympathies go to Zounds. The FP makes your slice look like it doesn't belong. Either wumpscut didn't read the rules, or he/she was trying to get one past Phineas (successfully, I might add.)

Phineas, why have rules if they aren't going to be enforced? Yes, I know it's "only" a game, but c'mon! A football game where the infractions are ignored devolves into chaos, and everyone feels cheated. Well, you created this wonderful site and you can do with it what you will, but expect more princes.

murfinator at May 23, 2006 7:07 AM

I think the last 3 panels are really nice. The transition from the first panel could've gone differently, but it's the first for wumpscut.

Who among us was really good with the first panel? I think we all get a goofup now and then.

Keep at it Wumpscut!!

Wild........ at May 23, 2006 7:42 AM

Gag...barf...puke...At least most of us made an attempt. This is egregious on both ends. No extension from Slice 1; no "dangly bits" for Slice 3 to work with. Throw the flag..you're outta here!

FogBaron at May 23, 2006 8:18 AM

People might hate me for saying this but for me this works a lot better than those bad seams where the two sections have just been blurred together, or stretched down with the smudge tool. That to me is just a disregard for how the piece will look as those kind of seams rarely if ever look good, just very amateur. Obviously in this case, for whatever reason, the section hasn't been extended at all, but for once it doesn't offend me here. i think it is because of the sharp changes in colour in sections 3 and 4. they bring the piece together as a whole. Also, i think leaving a completely white section for someone is kinda cool - i've though of doing it before :) I guess i like the minimal, graphic corpses the best (and the last two sections of this corpse are great!)

slinkachu at May 23, 2006 8:38 AM

Guys, i'm sooooo sorry about this. This is my first one of these and i feel like a total ass for not understanding the process completely.... I feel really shitty about the entire thing. Very sorry to Zoundspadang... For some reason, i was under the impression that this site would do some sort of voodoo and mix the images together some way some how... After i did my panel, i learned from a from of mine that's a member here that what i did was an fp... "what the hell is an fp?" I was shown the picture of fresh prince.... lol..... i felt so stupid..... i wanted to apologize to everyone for what i did.... so here it is...

sorry guys.... I'm an idiot... yes its true... apparently what my wife has been telling me for years is true....lol.....

Phineas, can i leave your office now and go play outside? =)

:wumpscut: at May 23, 2006 8:47 AM

I have to agree with Slinkachu and say that I don't see anything wrong with leaving a completely white (or other coloured) slice for the next player to work with, but with regards to Wumpscut's slice above; yes, he may be a newbie, but there's 'goofups' and then there's blatent disregard for the rules.

I think that one of the most important issues when it comes to continuing the slice you have been given is the fact that if you don't at least make a little effort towards a smooth transition, it's the other three participants that are losing out. Strikes me as incredibly unfair.

I'm with Murfinator on this one. What's the point in having rules if they're never enforced?

coal2k at May 23, 2006 8:49 AM

I think there's top notch work here from the last two artists, and a very intriguing first panel. That's about it, the weird thing is that because of velocity girl and Andrew, :wumpscut:'s slice looks like it belongs in the corpse and the top panel looks like the odd one out. I can't imagine how pissed ZoundsPadang is. It's like starting a conversation and the other people changing the topic without acknowledging what you said.

Maria P at May 23, 2006 8:50 AM

velocity girl, sorry about just leaving you a white 15pixel strip.... i've seen your stuff and you rock.... errrr... my bad, my bad.... i even messed up with my image.. there is a white border which you really can't tell is there unless youlook at the sides... those semi circle things are supposed to go to the very edge....

:wumpscut: at May 23, 2006 8:56 AM

Wumpscut, I hope you stay on and have a go at some more corpses. Everyone's got a learning curve and I'm interested to see what you come up with next.

I don't think there's anything necessarily *wrong* with leaving no trailers. I was just kind of ruminating on the interesting dilemma of continuing a corpse with nothing to go on since I had never encountered a slice like that before. The upside is that it obviously makes for a very easy and clean transition and leaves lots of room for creativity. The rub is that it makes it much less likely that the corpse will flow into one coherent piece (see 413 for an example of amazing continuity between all four panels). Personally, I prefer corpses that, to borrow Maria P's comparison, work as a conversation or a story. Without trailers and clues, it's like four people talking to themselves.

velocity girl at May 23, 2006 9:10 AM

Wumpscut, I'm glad you learned the rules and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do after applying them. Your piece is cool in its own right, apart from the seam issue.

Kudos to the other players, Velocity Girl I especially love your piece.

Shae at May 23, 2006 9:34 AM

What people have overlooked in discussing wumpscut's unintentional FP is the fact that the panel itslef is GORGEOUS. Clean, simple B+W, elegant shadows, unidentifiable winglike/buglike objects. It's like an organic rorschach! The two following panels are beautiful, too. And the first is of course great but deserves a different continuation...

Please keep playing, Wumpscut! You've obviously got a lot of artistic skill. Now that you know how the game works, I'm sure you'll produce many wonderful contributions.

I wish I could have seen what those equations turned into. Perhaps that first slice could be fed back into CMS?

On an unrelated note, I agree with Slinkachu about blurred or stretched seams (and a lot of the copy-paste repeated ones, too). I'd rather see a clean line than a lot of smudge marks or a mirroring / wallpapering of "look, here's the 15 pixels I got". In any case, the seam is visible - at least the clear line looks intentional. As a design professor once told me, "You can make mistakes, as long as it looks like you did it on purpose." Done well, a seam can look good - if it speaks to the previous panel. But a lot of these blurry, smudged transitions look bad, because they look half-assed. Just my two cents.

dagfooyo at May 23, 2006 10:06 AM

Hey now, I don't mind the 'no dangly bits' part -- every once in a while it's nice to get a free-and-clear slice to work from instead of a heavily detailed texture. (And the absence of detail is itself a clue to the layout of the previous slice, so it's not like you're leaving the next guy totally on his own.)

It looks like wumpscut misunderstood the rules a bit, but I'm inclined to give first-timers the benefit of the doubt...

Daniel at May 23, 2006 10:29 AM

Heh. I should remember to reload the page before I post; I started typing right after FogBaron's comment, didn't hit post until two hours later. (I'm easily distracted.) (Duckies.)

Daniel at May 23, 2006 10:35 AM

I think that as Wumpscut has admitted he made a mistake and will do better in future, all should be forgiven.
It's only when people who have been around this site long enough to know better (you know who you are) ruin a corpse for everyone involved because they just can't be bothered, that everyone has a real right to be angry.

But I am biased because my first ever attempt at a corpse is about to appear within the next few days and I'm already bracing myself for the abuse...
I promise mine won't be an FP, but I suspect it might have one of those blurry, smudged half-assed transitions...
:-(

I agree with Dagfooyo though - perhaps that first slice could be fed back into CMS? I studied physics at University so I can identify with mind-bending equations... although I guess it spoils the surprise a bit if we've all already seen the complete slice.

Anyway I like all four slices - it's just the continuity that's wrong.
Hmm, COULD anyone do the magic Wumpscut was hoping for and blend them together? They both basically have backgrounds of white paper - just very different shades...

Kessie at May 23, 2006 10:52 AM

i can't believe i'm going to say this, but i really like it. i know i've been pretty harsh on FPs like this before, but... i've got to agree with Phineas on this one. Yes, it was a fumble, but it was a clean one, with lots of whitespace - the clean line it left under Zound's slice is echoed in VG's clean diagonals, as is the slight purplish tint... and Wump's abstract ovals are echoed in VG's eye. really, it's quite nice, and proof that the hive mind was at work even despite the inexperience of one player.

unapologetic at May 23, 2006 10:53 AM

Everyone makes mistakes. :wumpscut:, here's to learning ... *clink*.

Patrick Beverley at May 23, 2006 11:45 AM

::sniff, sniff::

thanks guys....I feel all fuzzy inside.....damn gerbil.....

:wumpscut: at May 23, 2006 12:36 PM

The hive mind indeed saved this one, it's mathematical, it's magical.

billporter at May 23, 2006 2:49 PM

I have to say that the Fresh Prince is so clean and pure, it looks pretty good. And :wumpscut:'s panel is very nice.
Nothing wrong with leaving pure whitness following your slice, is there?
and...erm... it doesn't look like Zoundspadang actually knocked themselves out on their panel, timewise ( ...though I do like it, Z!)
I actually didn't notice the FP for a while, I was enjoying the corspe so much.
The end result is cool, scientific, and precisely a bit creepy.

Hang in there, :wumpy: I think you'll do some good panels.

AndyFromJava at May 23, 2006 5:26 PM

Oh...all right. :wumpscut: can stay to corpse again. His/her contrition and sense of humor have won me over.

(Sheesh. I can't believe what a softy I've turned into...)

FogBaron at May 23, 2006 5:35 PM

Yeah Zounds' is a bit weak. Not sure what I'd do with that (pass it?) At least ratchet up the contrast, you know?

But still every corpse is an experiment, and the result is great notwithstanding.

Jim at May 23, 2006 7:51 PM

OK HERE'S THE GOOD PART! IF YOU ARE SCANNING THROUGH READ THIS!
Hi wumpbutt. I'm the guy you screwed. Thanks a bunch. I worked for ages and look what you did. I didn't even get a good grade on the homework.

kk so im just joking. As disappointed as I am that that idea didn't work out, I am impressed with what you did, and how the rest of the corpse turned out. I cant wait to see what you will do when you finally figure out how to play nice. Didn't you read the instructions though?

and im sorry for making fun of your name.

Zounds Padang at May 23, 2006 7:57 PM

Foggy.....I'm glad that you've finally given wumpscut the 'ok' to stay.

I think we should take it as a compliment that sumpscut thought the images were just mixed up in the computer and put together to make gorgeous images......that says how good we really are!!

Wild........ at May 23, 2006 8:05 PM

Who is "sumpscut"? (Sounds like that icky stuff that gets caught around the edges of a basement drain...)

FogBaron at May 24, 2006 8:31 AM

Ah.. you guys are great, i dont think leaving a white space is a crime worth the chair, depending on the corpse it could work out fantasticly. but that said it shouldent be made a habit of. as for wumpscut's piece, he uses his newbie token to survive this jump of the sharks this time, nothing saves him next time. YArrrrrr. (no offense if you cut off the top two works you still get a damn good corpse with the last two :P)

unsultus at May 24, 2006 9:32 AM

Actually, thanks to v-girls excellent "save", 3 of the 4 work out ok, methinks...matey.

FogBaron at May 24, 2006 9:59 AM

well hell...thank you everyone for the compliments. my eye is watering with joy. can you see?

wumpscut, next time you and i do a corpse together it will just rock everyone's socks off. i can feel it.

velocity girl at May 24, 2006 12:50 PM

Yeah, the first bit is unfortunate, but clearly we've reached a point of closure with it. The rest looks great.
