It was more meta than "ironic" (i.e., I was drawing attention to the conceits and requirements of the genre); more a commentary on the process than on "doing something unexpected". I suppose it can be read as ironic/mundane in the context and fortunately that speaks well to my intention.
Totally works for Halloween, though.
