An Exquisite Corpse

wow. that's pretty lovely. not one, but TWO stretched people. It still somewhat looks like two seperate corpses though and it's a shame that furrychildren's dotted border didn't get carried all the way through. but i like it. a lot. congrats!

me at July 13, 2005 6:31 AM

I love the re-telling of the famous Vietnamese shooting photo. Creepy and touching at the same time. I agree with me that the piece as a whole feels like two Corpses, but they're two good one.

ivan at July 13, 2005 7:51 AM

The collective subconscious was telling me to add water. Now I see why.

This was my first attempt with a little paintbrush action. It turned out relatively decent (except for the fact that I wasn't sure if it even looked like water, hence the descriptiveness of the title. heh).

velocity girl at July 13, 2005 7:52 AM

Let me look this over and see if it is decent or not...hmmmmm....

A ciggie! Alert the anti-smoking nazis.

hmmm.....

A man's head being crushed by the fingers of God and man that is also an image taken from a far more violent photo. This could lead to some serious problems amongst religous groups, anti-violence in media groups, Vietnam vets, anti-war groups, Asian groups, those concerned with the rudeness of messing with someone else's artwork, those against text in corpses and on and on and on... whoa.

Oh, yes, this one is without a doubt a troublemaker. BAN IT!

Seriously, I would have liked to have seen the dotted border brought all the way down, too. I like the colors, yellow with blue. Very nice.

Miss Daze at July 13, 2005 7:55 AM

I find this piece disturbing in that it has a skeleton, the guy from vietnam and a nonchalant Bimbo who doesn't have a Clue as to what is happening. The guy from Vietnam picture is one I hope never to see again......give me nudes!

Wild...... at July 13, 2005 8:13 AM

Yes, more nudes! They can't hide weapons.

Miss Daze at July 13, 2005 8:23 AM

The hands of god are juicing the Vietnamese guy.

The more controversy and the more boobies the better. Who the hell ever said art should be freakin' rainbows and unicorns?

Heroin McEcstacy at July 13, 2005 8:50 AM

I like it.

FogBaron at July 13, 2005 9:27 AM

I agree with the feeling that it is 2 different, but excellent, corpses.
is it slightly disturbing? yes
does that make it bad? no
art should provoke thought and discussion and this piece should provoke more than a whole corpse full of boobies.
I find it sad that the man from vietnam seems to have his fate in the balance between god and man

wotty at July 13, 2005 9:38 AM

Rainbows and Unicorns? Now, that is what I would consider truly disturbing.

Miss Daze at July 13, 2005 10:19 AM

The picture of that man is just sad period. Especially if you are familiar with the original photo from which it came.

Miss Daze at July 13, 2005 10:21 AM

Good art reflects the world around us.

The world around us is disturbing.

Therefore good art is disturbing.

Could somebody write to Rage Against The Machine or InMe for a soundtrack to this corpse? (Actually, let's get Metallica. Can you imagine how chuffed they'd be if they had a legitimate reason to call an album "Soundtrack to a Corpse"?)

Patrick Beverley at July 13, 2005 10:25 AM

What makes you think she's a Bimbo?

Patrick Beverley at July 13, 2005 10:26 AM

Metallica are crap now and RAtM broke up. If I want someone to write 'Soundtrack to a Corpse', I'll talk to Rob Zombie.

Phineas at July 13, 2005 10:33 AM

Can't deny the former, didn't know the latter. But it's not Metallica's music I want them for, it's the look on their little faces when we suggest the title.

Patrick Beverley at July 13, 2005 10:47 AM

"Rob Zombie"!!! look if you want an album called SOUNDTRACK TO A CORPSE then really the only band up to the job is SLAYER. Rob Zombie, honestly some people just have no idea when it comes to real corpsey devil worshiping music.

bone at July 13, 2005 11:13 AM

If you really want to eff people up get Jessica Simpson to do a duet with Marilyn Manson.

Heroin McEcstacy at July 13, 2005 12:15 PM

The accused Bimbo seems to be waiting for Jessica to comment on whether she has patience or not. Perhaps a duet with Marilyn is what the artist had in mind?

Very Strict Headmistress at July 13, 2005 5:22 PM

PR: Why do I think she is a Bimbo?
First off..... she is smoking.
Secondly.....because she is smoking, she clearly has no idea about the value of life. The Vietnam guy has value of life written all over his face. He did not want to die.....she just doesn't care.
Bimbo.

Wild...... at July 13, 2005 6:37 PM

In My Opinion.

Wild...... at July 13, 2005 6:56 PM

Perhaps 'Bimbo' knows more about the value of life than you will EVER know, and THAT is why she smokes and patiently waits for Death of Jessica.

Very Strict Headmistress at July 13, 2005 7:23 PM

it you inspect more closely, the "bimbo" is a young defiant girl, not yet a woman. she is wiling away her youth as she observes the oh so very patient person, posed at the computer, long time awaiting their corpse to be posted on EC.

not much of a story really, but there it is.

hasfurrychildren at July 13, 2005 9:22 PM

Furry....I like your story.
Headmistress....Is perhaps the picture of Bimbo someone close to you?

Wild...... at July 13, 2005 11:44 PM

Ms Very Strcit Headmistress to you Wild! Not as close as you think ... Here is a Bimbo pointer for you: Starts with the letter J. Quick thinking now ... I DON'T have patience!

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 12:39 AM

Personally, I would prefer a soundtrack by Dead Can Dance.

Wild, didn't know you were one of the anti-smoking nazis I was referring to. What do you call men who smoke?

Miss Daze at July 14, 2005 2:17 AM

Before, we were referring to artvsporn, now there is good/bad art? Patrick, do you think that "good" art can simply reflect the interior of the artist?

Miss Daze at July 14, 2005 2:31 AM

of course there is good art and bad art but because these definitions are based on the preferences of the viewer a piece can be seen as both by people with different tastes.

a pile of bricks was seen as art by some yet to me it seemed like the emperor's new clothes as you can buy pallets of bricks far cheaper at most builders' suppliers.

a cow cut in half and preserved in formaldehyde was seen as art yet to me it's just a biology experiment.

graffitti is seen as vandalism yet to me, some is art of the highest quality.

it all comes down to the old saying............
I don't know art but I know what I like.

wotty at July 14, 2005 3:21 AM

and I like this corpse

wotty at July 14, 2005 3:21 AM

Like beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder. An exquisite meal beautifully served is art to me. As are many other mundane things if treated with passion, care, invested with a bit of one's soul.

That is why some of these corpses are dead while others live. Or just pieces of them.

Miss Daze at July 14, 2005 3:36 AM

This corpse lives parallel to the art of being a very strict headmistress. Must also agree this same art form is exquisitely performed by one Miss Daze. Three stars for you ***

Wotty - I know art AND I know what I like!

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 4:27 AM

For my first corpse... It came out quite well, but I don't care for it at all. The photo of the vietnamese man gave me nightmares as a kid when I first saw that. It's rather the last thing I hoped to see.

jaynedarcy at July 14, 2005 6:32 AM

Only THREE! Microsoft Very Strict Headmistress is indeed Very strict.

Miss Daze at July 14, 2005 6:55 AM

Personally, I think this is a very good corpse because of the discussions it has evoked. It raises all kinds of emotions, passions, questions. Which, I think, is what art does.

Wild...... at July 14, 2005 7:39 AM

not many nipples in this one though:-(

bone at July 14, 2005 7:56 AM

Are you side stepping MY question Wild? Quick thinking now ... must I repeat I DON'T have patience! Are you now questioning what art does? In your case it looks like slight confusion ...

Very nice first submission jaynedarcy, smooth sailing and you DID continue hasfurrychildren's dotted frame ... well done.

Where's Jessica?

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 8:00 AM

So are SO hard Bone!

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 8:01 AM

Fantastic work, subVorkian. And velocitygirl, with the exquisite finish!

Jessica at July 14, 2005 8:25 AM

IT'S JESSICA!!!!!!!!

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 8:36 AM

Are we done here?

FogBaron at July 14, 2005 9:22 AM

I don't know art either. But I love this corpse.

And I don't feel the need to make moral judgments about its subjects. It's nice to know that Wild.... can look at a partially obscured photograph of someone and know her personality, but I'm obviously not so clever, as I make no claims to understand her character or that of the Vietnam soldier.

Patrick Beverley at July 14, 2005 12:38 PM

Oh, and, yes, I agree entirely Miss Daze, I was just making a somewhat clumsy point against censorship in art and for this corpse. Sorry if I irritated anyone.

Patrick Beverley at July 14, 2005 12:55 PM

I would like the last word, we're done here.

subVorkian at July 14, 2005 1:08 PM

standing in the pouring rain, i offered to share my umbrella with a complete stranger, but i was completely misunderstood. so the stranger got drenched.

hasfurrychildren at July 14, 2005 1:37 PM

an interesting comment but I'm not sure what it means in the context of this corpse :\

wotty at July 14, 2005 5:53 PM

Hasfurrychildren is stating her intention for the image has been misunderstood. Therefore those who misread the message will suffer for it.

Very Strict Headmistress at July 14, 2005 6:36 PM

ah I see

to me the story of this corpse is as follows:
the person with patience quietly sits at her pc, waiting for her hard drve to defrag, and starves to death while the person without patience goes off for a cigarette and meets a friend. has a conversation that leads to a trip round south east asia. while there she sees the attrocities committed by man in the name of god and returns home to build a meditative water feature in a restful corner of her garden.
if I have misinterpreted any of the sections then I suppose I'll have to stand in the rain (which, in the present heatwave we're having, would be nice)

wotty at July 15, 2005 8:51 AM

Hey, all! Why not continue flogging this Corpse in the Forum? It's working now, and that's what it's there for.
